Lucknow’s Hazratganj Hauraha Renamed to ‘Atal Chowk’ on the Former Prime Minister’s First Death Anniversary: Uttar Pradesh government renamed Lucknow’s Hazratganj Chauraha to ‘Atal Chowk’ in the memory of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Vajpayee passes away on August 16, 2018, after a prolonged illness in AIIMS Delhi. He was 93 years old.
On his first death anniversary last Friday, Yogi Adityanath government took this decision in the memory of one of the most respected leaders India has ever seen.
‘Hazratganj’ is a major shopping area and is an important location in many aspects. It is one of the most beautiful places in the capital city of Uttar Pradesh.
Thus, Hazratganj Chauraha, now Atal Chowk can be considered the heart of the Lucknow. One of the busiest centers in the city, it’s often the site of most celebrations.
It is also one of the few places where the Traditional side of Lucknow blends beautifully with the Lucknow of Modern times.
As such, renaming the place after Atal Ji was a befitting homage to the former PM who opened new paths to make India a global presence.
The Government’s Take
Speaking on the decision, Lucknow Mayor Sanyukta Bhatia said –
“A number of councilors were demanding different roads and roundabouts be named after Atal Bihari Vajpayee. However, we were looking something grand enough to fit the stature of the former Prime Minister. It has been decided that most prominent and biggest intersection of Lucknow – Hazratganj Chauraha – will be named after Bharat Ratna Vajpayee.”
She also revealed that the plan for developing a memorial for the former PM is in motion. The new memorial, Atal Smriti Upvan will have a statue of the former PM along with his 51 poems, speeches and other memorabilia.
