The coronavirus pandemic outbreak made situations and conditions worse for everyone. Most of the business operations by top companies has come to a halt. Many of these companies are facing a cash crunch due to minimum business operations are running. They have forced employees to accept pay-cuts and lay-offs. All fields have faced challenges during this unprecedented situation. Lockdown restrictions are put across India to slow down the spread of the deadly coronavirus disease.
The sports world has seen adverse effects on Olympic games due to the strict lockdown restrictions which the government has put to curb the spread of coronavirus disease.
Not only the business world but also the sports world has come to a drastic halt. Everyone from the world of sports is profoundly affected by the strict lockdown restrictions implemented by the government. The cricket series, domestic and international athletics tournament and the Olympic qualifiers all have been affected by the lockdown restrictions due to coronavirus. T
he Sport’s Ministry has also suspended all training camps. Those who qualified for Olympic games or were about to qualify for the Olympics were exceptions. However, the Olympic game qualifiers had to take permission from their sports federation. Without their permission, they would not be allowed to avail of the training facilities outside their homes.
The Sports Authority of India (SAI) terminated the tickets for the Indian men and women hockey teams who went home for a week’s break.
The Indian hockey teams of both men and women are held in the Bengaluru centre of the Sports Authority of India (SAI). The women’s hickey team players got a one week break from their four-week camp. During the break, some of the women players stayed home, and the other players got the information that their tickets got cancelled by the Sports Authority of India (SAI).
Sjoerd Marijne, who is the head coach of the team, also had his ticket canceled by SAI. The head coach arranged a meeting with the players in which he asked the players to focus entirely on 24th July until further information because that was the starting date scheduled for Tokyo Olympics. He further said that the players were disappointed because they could not go home due to the unprecedented situations. Marijne said that the players needed that break because it becomes difficult to stay away from your family for a long time. Considering the environment in which they train, a break provides not only physical but also mental and emotional relief to a person.
Players would play other sports tournament so that they remain focussed for the immediate task and do not lose hope.
Graham Reid, who is the men’s coach, said that the players would be playing other sports tournaments and volleyball amongst themselves to keep them focussed. The staff are also mulling tournaments related to Olympic simulation within the camp amongst the players.
They are planning to conduct similar tournaments as Olympic games which will comprise around eight games played in thirteen days. Four different combinations for playing these tournament games will get decided as well. They are trying to explain the players the importance of inter-squad matches through these tournaments.
