Akshay Kumar Speaks about His Rs. 2 Crore Donation for the Assam Floods – “Kahaan leke jaane hai paise”: Last month when floods ravaged Assam, Akshay Kumar was one of the first people to step forward and offer help.
He donated Rs. 1 Crore each to the Assam Chief Minister’s Relief Fund and for the rescue work in Kaziranga National Park.
At that time, he shared the news through a tweet, in which he urged everyone to step forward –
“Absolutely heartbreaking to know about the devastation by floods in Assam. All affected, humans or animals, deserve support in this hour of crises. I’d like to donate 1 cr each to the CM Relief Fund & for Kaziranga Park rescue. Appealing to all to contribute.”
Now, in a recent interview with a media outlet, he shared his thoughts on the donation and on being praised for it.
When asked about his donation for the Assam floods last month, the actor said that God has given him enough money, so he gives away without thinking twice.
He revealed that the images coming from the flood-hit areas of Assam made him sad. One particular picture of a mother carrying her baby on the shoulder while wading through neck-deep floodwaters really affected him.
He said – “…There was no expression of sadness or stress on her face. And that’s a dangerous sign. What all she must have gone through that she forgot all her sorrows. When I come across such photos, I am like, it can happen to my wife or my daughter. ‘Aisi photos bahut choobhtin hai’ (Photos like these sting a lot). That’s why I did what I did.”
He further said – “I also saw some images of animals like rhinoceros, who were drowning, dying and screaming. We should all come together during such times regardless of whether you can donate Rs. 2 or 5 lakhs. That’s how a country is made. And humanity is all about that. I admit that God has given me a lot of money, so I give away without thinking twice. Kahaan leke jaane hai paise. “
The True Happiness
The actor was heaped with praises from all directions after his initiative to help and for his generosity.
But for Akshay, things are different. In his own words –
“Honestly, when I gave the money, I didn’t feel good. But I felt really good when I got a call from the Assam Chief Minister (Sarbananda Sonowal), who told me that, after my donation, a lot of people donated as well. That made me happy.”
In simple words, not the act itself but the effect it had on others, inspiring them to come forward to help too, is what made the actor happy. The trust and faith in humanity.
He continued, “I really feel that our nation is an amazing one. If there’s ever any problem, you just have to start something and then there’s a ripple effect. You know, when I worked on ‘Bharat Ke Veer’ app, you can’t imagine how many people made donations. India is a large-hearted nation. We just need a little push.”
The Philanthropist Kumar
It is notable that this was not the first time Akshay had come forward for a philanthropic cause.
The actor had also donated Rs 1 crore, when Fani Cyclone had hit Odisha in May, to help the victims rebuild their lives.
He has been involved in other charitable activities as well, including but not limited to, ‘Bharat Ke Veer’ initiative and his contribution during the Kerala and Chennai floods.
